Hiking and parking in a national park is always best if you start early. We head up the Beehive; one of Acadia’s most popular hikes at eight. It’s less than a six hundred foot climb overall but it’s thirty five degrees or steeper for at least half the scramble up. Hundreds of feet of the trail are straight up or close to it. We tightly grasp smooth metal handles embedded in the rock to aid access. The views are well worth the climb. Ferries and lobster boats track back and forth over flat seas beneath us.

A pond we passed earlier, filled with croaking frogs in mating mode, now lies far below us, a silent blue-green oval. Islands dot the horizon for a full two hundred degrees or more around us. The blue cloudless sky offers no protection from the sun up here, but we don’t seek shade since it’s nice and cool.
After an hour we head down, then stroll over the sandy beach to sunbathe. More Pictures
