how to live, travel and explore the world from your van

Camden to Belfast Maine

A Camden lady says, “Since you are on a budget, you should park here on this road for free, and hike the Camden Hills State Park. You can avoid the normal tourists entry point where a fee is charged, that’s what all the locals do. This will take you to one of the best three mile round trip hikes in the park. You will get great ocean and lake views from Maiden Cliffs. It is strenuous though.”

She’s right on all accounts. We only see three other people and two dogs on this very steep, rocky, climb like tromp up the bluffs, over the hills, and to the top of a small mountain. We make it back to the van in three hours or so, happy, calm, and very tired. My feet throb. Kelly’s legs shake. The van is warm. The sky is blue. We’re off!

Next we patronize the Belfast YMCA for shower time, then the retail stores, galleries, and food tasting joints downtown. Then we visit a local pizza shop just to look at the menu. Wow! They are selling burgers for two dollars and fifty-five cents and foot long subs for five bucks.
